Clean up, Everybody Everywhere

Last weekend we were busy bees. All over Philadelphia, residents were cleaning up their corners of the neighborhood for the city's annual Clean Up day. Bill organized a clean up of the empty lot across the street from our house. It's nice because there are a ton of trees, but it's also a dumping ground for trash and lots of random things (like bicycle wheels and car parts). So, a ton of people from church and some neighbors spent a few hours cleaning up. I really wish I had before and after pictures. They filled a "Bagster", provided by the City - a gigantic "tote bag" that holds (no kidding) 3,300 lbs. of trash. A special truck comes around
to pick it up. Ours only got picked up a few minutes ago - it was sitting around all weekend. Looked kind of funny. The picture of the lot (below) is the "after" shot. Just picture the before shot - weeds as tall as Grace, lots of litter, etc. etc. :)
We really loved helping with this. It was so great to hang out with people from church.

Seeing people give up a few hours on a Saturday to clean a neighborhood they don't even live in is such a powerful example of servanthood to me. Grace was in on it too, of course, running all over the place and handing out dandelions (her favorite flower) to everyone.

After the cleanup, Bill mowed our tiny lawn with his brand-new Amish push-mower. He looks even more handsome to me when he uses this thing. I love his hobbies. Worm farming and push mowing. He's a hottie.
